What are you doing for Earth Day? This year will mark its 40th anniversary! On this day in 1970, over 20 million people gathered to participate in peaceful demonstrations for environmental reform. The date is also special for WiserEarth, which launched on Earth Day 2007.

Earth Day 2010

The Earth Day movement originated in the United States, and contributed to increased protections for air, wilderness, and the ocean, as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The celebration has spread internationally, and is currently observed in 175 countries.

This year Earth Day coincides with both the International Year of Biodiversity and The World People’s Conference on Climate Change in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Check out the WiserEarth group with coverage around the Bolivia conference! It is also being webcast online by OneClimate and the Global Campaign for Climate Action.

WiserEarth volunteers on Earth Day

We decided to celebrate our 3rd anniversary today by volunteering locally in San Francisco for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to help maintain Crissy Field, an area restored from a military airfield to its former condition as a natural space, including wetlands, bluffs and dunes. It’s good to remember that local actions, on a global scale, can have a major impact.
