Following several weeks of voting and deliberation by a panel of Wiser.org judge-editors, we are proud to announce that Paul Coleman (also known as Earthwalker) from Patagonia is the winner of the Earth Day Living competition.

We’d like to congratulate everyone who entered Wiser’s Earth Day Living competition and for sharing your personal and collective actions in creating a more sustainable World. The competition aimed to help shine a light on how people in the global community are embracing actions that are leading to a sustainable future. The entries received a total of 1,150 votes through Wiser.org’s Facebook page.

We would like to congratulate Paul Coleman on his winning entry:

“My wife and I are creating a sustainable lifestyle in Patagonia, Chile. Building energy, earth efficient home by hand, materials sourced locally, eating organic vegetable from permaculture garden, spreading the environmental message, through personal experience and hands on education for volunteers.” (photo & caption were submitted as Paul’s entry)

The judges were really impressed to see the high quality and thoughtfulness of many of the entries. They covered an extremely wide range of activities from renewable solar campaigns, to boat journeys to local recycling programs. Many of the photographs and captions were inspirational and of an extremely high standard.

The winning entry from Paul gave the judges a sense of depth of action in making a difference in the world, at home, and in influencing others along the way.

Paul’s prize of US $1,000 which will be donated to the not-for-profit organization of his choice by WiserEarth, the NGO which runs the Wiser.org network. This is what Paul said when he heard that his entry had won:

“Thank you ever so much for this wonderful news. I had to read it twice to make sure that I had read it correct! It’s raining here in Patagonia, but your message has delivered plenty of sunshine.

We have been hard at work here for the past few years and this recognition will surely help us to advance our cause.

We would like to donate the prize money to Food and Trees For Africa (FTFA) to help them create a permaculture food garden in a school and community where they really need it.

I have participated in several of their garden plantings in townships before and love the work they do.

We look forward to sharing more about Food and Trees for Africa and shining a light on both Paul and FTFA’s work in forthcoming Wiser.org blogs.

The 3 runners up, Karen Corr from Bendigo (Australia), Aulridge Chibbwala from Livingstone (Zambia) and Conrad Chia from Cameroon all showed an equal strength in personal and community action taken to create a sustainable planet.

Read more about these entries and the competition on the judges wiki page on Wiser.org.

To all of the other entrants, we thank you for your time and effort in sharing with everyone your actions.

Our deepest gratitude to all of the judges for your help and deliberation time that you spent selecting the winners.
