Get “Fired Up” for Rio+20
![]() |
WiserEarth founder Paul Hawken joins the “Earth’s Lawyer” Polly Higgins in San Francisco this Friday at Fired Up for Rio+20, an evening focused on establishing Ecocide as the United Nation’s 5th Crime Against Peace. An event not to miss! |
“Rio+20 is a moment in history when world leaders can demonstrate their commitment to the Earth,” says Higgins. “Under an Ecocide law, the world can opt-in to a law that places people and planet first.”
The ratification would grant ecocide the same status as the other four crimes against peace–genocide, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression and war crimes; thereby holding CEOs and Heads and State legally responsible for environmental destruction.
Produced by Cinema Connect, Friday’s event will also feature filmmakers Josh Tickell and Mark Kitchell, who will show excerpts from their films “The Big Fix” and “A Fierce Green Fire.”
Higgins, a UK barrister and author, is universally known for championing the legal status of the Earth through a strategy which includes mock trials. In a test trial in the UK supreme court last autumn, two multinational corporations involved in Tar Sands extraction were found guilty of ecocide for destroying global ecosystems. Higgins, who in 2010 addressed the UN on the concept of Ecocide, is campaigning to include her proposal on the official Rio+20 agenda at June’s United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (The Earth Summit). Higgins’ proposal has gained significant traction during her current trip to the United States and Canada.
The program will run from 7 to 10pm with networking opportunities throughout the evening. For more event details and tickets, visit the event page.

Hi Paul, it comes as no surprise that you are tied in with Polly and “Trees-have-rights-too” and “5th Crime Against Peace – Ecocide” nonsense. It is time that you environmental extremists realised that you are in a very small minority and will achieve nothing with your huffing and puffing. The general public are not interested in extremism of any sort.
I tried to engage with Polly back on 11th April 2010 on her “Launch of (http://thelazyenvironmentalist.blogspot.com/2010/04/launch-of-thisisecocidecom.html) but she wasn’t inclined to do so. You can find more on that in my article “”Ecocide” – The UN’s Next Scam? After all, “Trees Have Rights Too” (http://globalpoliticalshenanigans.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html).
I also tried to exchange opinions with you only a few days ago on your WiserEarth “About” thread (http://www.wiserearth.org/user/paul/) then by E-mail but again no desire to engage.
Greenpeace is just the same regarding the Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change (CACC) hypothesis nonsense. What’s wrong with you environmental extremists (apart from the extremism)?
Why do you expect the UN’s “Rio + 20” conference to be any less a fiasco that its COP15 Copenhagen Catastrophe, its COP16 Cancun Caper and its COP17 Durban Debacle?
I can understand the delegates wanting to enjoy a couple of weeks holiday on expenses but as for achieving anything worthwhile for the deprived millions around the globe it will achieve sweet nothing.
Best regards, Pete Ridley
That was an amazing event! Many thanks to the organizers & filmmakers.
What a fabulous evening! Let’s host a screening of The Big Fix … yes?
Paul’s talk was so inspiring and truthful. Yes, we are in the ‘dark ages’ already…. just hearing him say that took a huge psychological weight off my shoulders and made me realize that the beams of light I see are not desperate but sparks of life and hope.
Hi Paul, Timonie and Deborah, I understand that the shindig took place in San Francisco but Paul lives in Sausalito and dear Polly lives in the UK. Well, being a Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change (CACC) sceptic I have to ask how they managed to get to the venue. It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that Paul walked the 9 miles to get there (but I have my doubts and speculate that he used his car) whereas Polly almost certainly flew.
I raised the issue of her apparent hypocrisy with Polly a couple of years ago on her “Trees have rights too” thread (http://thelazyenvironmentalist.blogspot.com/) but she declined to post my comment, so I posted an article “Ecocide” – The UN’s Next Scam? After all, “Trees Have Rights Too” on my blog (http://globalpoliticalshenanigans.blogspot.com/2010/04/ecocide-uns-next-scam-after-all-trees.html).
That comment applies not only to Polly but to all followers of the Environmentalist Religion QUOTE: ..
Polly, although I have great respect for those who do their bit to protect the environment and try very hard myself to leave it as I find it, don’t you think that it is time for you to have a re-appraisal of your stance and your actual lifestyle. You are in danger of letting your enthusiasm turn you into a blind extremist akin to religious extremists.
The vast majority of us reject extremism, .. have you ever considered that maybe, just maybe, you are a hypocrite? Looking at your different blogs, your presentations and the other information that you present about yourself leads me to think that you might be. Let me present a few examples of why I am suspicious about your motives when making that ludicrous claim that “trees have rights too”. How many trees had their “rights” denied because of the following:
- (Note 1); manufacturing the hair products, the make-up, the clothes, the education and training, the living accommodation in London, all of those interests (like wine, long walks in accessible countryside)
- (Note 2); clearing that lovely field, travelling there from London, manufacturing those walking shoes/boots, clothes, rucksacks
- (Note 3); that “remarkable journey” to Edinburgh in June 2008 not to forget the journey to the UN Mother Earth” rights),
- (Note 4); travelling to Anchorage, Alaska in May 2009,
- (Note 5); travelling to Munich in July 2009 to the Desertec extravaganza
- (Note 6); last but by no means least that journey to the UN’s COP15 fiasco in Copenhagen.
I am sure there is much more travelling (and use of all of those wonderful communications and other facilities that humans have developed at the expense of trees rights) to be done, all in the name of protecting the rights of those trees. By the way, why stop at trees. There are all of those poor rats, mice, scorpions, snakes, mosquitoes, termites, etc, that need their rights protecting. Oh dear, I nearly forgot, don’t germs, viruses, etc. have rights too.
After due consideration Polly, I’m almost convinced – that you might well be a hypocrite. .. UNQUOTE.
Please have a think about it.
Best regards, Pete Ridley
