When I imagine a funnel I can see how they would use it as a metaphor. As you engage your online community you will notice a funnel effect: the engagement starts with you - the moderator - starting at the wide opening - representing a variety of individuals/followers - it goes down the pipe and it gets filtered as it goes down - at the end of the process you will have a few of the initial crowd responding/participating.
