The global day of climate action 10/10/10 is fast approaching, a little over two weeks away! WiserEarth advisory council member and editor Deborah Phelan has more on local activism that is building to a groundswell as the big day approaches, and how you can be a part of it through 10/10 and beyond! |

From BlackRock City’s 10.10.10 HEAT THE STREET FaIRE! to the grand opening of Los Angeles’ CicLAvia 7-mile carbon free zone (they aim to attract up to 50,000 Neg.CO2ers on 10/10) to Oakland’s mega-mega-mega Get Down & Dirty Day of Events, there’s just no doubt about it… As the countdown to 10.10.10 continues, we are gaining M-O-M-E-N-T-U-M!
But, if you haven’t yet thought about what you and your community could do on 10.10.10, take a look at 1BOG (One Block Off the Grid, where talking to your neighbors about forming a group for discounted solar paneling is one kool suggestion! “One Block Off the Grid gives you access to our exclusive pre-arranged group discounts on solar energy. There’s no more negotiating with the installer in your living room or worrying about costly add-ons.” (Here’s a link to the 1BOG field kit.)

Sign up NOW at 350.org or 10:10 global. Find an event near you or register an event. Hang around either site for awhile and take in all the fabulous energy percolating behind the scenes.

Commit to Community: Join with other members of your community in ongoing work to re-think, re-tool and re-skill your neighborhood, watershed or foodshed. For starters, download the Community Resilience Toolkit. Designed by Bay Localize, the toolkit has adaptable guidelines to assist groups in preparing for economic and climate instability. Resources include actions to build resilience around the areas of food, water, energy, transportation and housing, jobs and economy and Civic Preparedness and Social Services. Check out the tips for adapting the toolkit to your region.

As a strong advocate of seriously addressing Climate Change, especially as our government has refused to take the lead, or even a major role in this crisis, I applaud what you, Deborah Phelan, are doing. We need to think at the community level in terms of enacting changes, common practices in our daily lives that involve a more sustainable lifestyle. Water for Humans is also doing this through their clean-water solutions to under-served populations. Water for Humans is now in the beginning phase of constructing a state-of-the-art wetland in Oaxaca Valley, Mexico. The people their, overwhelmingly poor and vulnerable to the horrible and outdated sanitation system there, should greatly benefit, starting next year, by finally having access to clean, safe drinking water.
All of these topics–food, water, energy, transportation, and the economy are all inter-related. We must have a multi-faceted approach the Climate Change and save our planet! Thank you!

@WiserEarth I went to go buy a solar panel this weekend in prep. for 10/10/10 but they were all for cars. Any suggestions for PC/cell solar?
